One of the most influential women of her era, Frances Power Cobbe was a Victorian journalist, reformer, theologian and essayist. The fourteen essays collected in this edition first appeared between 1865 and 1871 in The Theological and Fortnightly Reviews, Fraser's and Macmillan's magazines, and The Manchester Friend. In addition to the title essay, this volume includes "The Religion of Childhood," "Unconscious Cerebration," and "The Evolution of Morals and Religion" among others. This book was originally published in 1872.
